Blog Post: Where Compassion and Care Meet: Home Care Nursing
posted Friday, June 13, 2008 10:17 AM
While facility and hospital nursing are rewarding, many nurses and aides enjoy providing a more personal level of care. This personal approach can be found through Home Health Care. Home Health companies such as NurseCore provide care in the clients’ home.
“Home” doesn’t always mean a private dwelling. Patients can reside in an assisted living or other facility. This allows the patient to remain in their home in lieu of an extended hospital stay, rehab center, or moving to other facility. Some patients are recovering from an illness or surgery while others simply require additional assistance to remain independent in their homes. Services range from companion care to skilled nursing. CNA’s are in demand to provide assistance with ADL’s and companionship. Client needs can vary from bathing visits to 24-hour care. LPN’s and RN’s are always needed to provide wound care, IV therapy, medication administration, and other skilled nursing tasks. Assignments can encompass short-term and long-term care. Home care nurses and CNA’s often develop a strong bond with their patients. For many, this is the most gratifying part of nursing; the knowledge that you have directly impacted a patient’s life. Choosing which Home Health Care company to work for is important. Some points to consider: *Make sure you are hired by the company and that they provide malpractice insurance from a reputable carrier; ask if they withhold taxes. *Make sure the company has a good reputation in the community and has been around awhile. *If you are interested in home care and per diem, ask the company if they can provide you with work in both areas. *Ask the company how they match up caregivers and clients. Is it based on availability or do they really try to match the caregivers’ strengths and personalities with that of the client? *Is an experienced RN available if you have questions or concerns? How about after hours or on weekends? Opportunities for nurses and CNA’s are endless, and home health nursing is a fantastic option. Becoming a home care provider is an excellent career path for nurses and CNA’s; Caregivers experience a high level of job satisfaction when working directly with clients in their homes, as well as competitive pay.
If you find yourself too hurried and losing that personal connection with your patients, perhaps home care nursing is for you…
