Blog Post: Is your resume holding you back?

posted Monday, January 26, 2009 9:58 AM

In the current economic climate, it is more important than ever to stand out among a sea of other job-seekers. You have excellent experience and a winning attitude; why aren’t you getting any call-backs? Maybe it’s your resume!

Everyday I receive dozens of resumes. The first thing I notice is not the applicants experience, but their grammar and spelling…When numerous errors are present, the message conveyed is that the applicant is not detail-oriented and the position I have available is not important to them.  Some recent examples:

“I am aplling for an position with your company”

“Dear Mrs. Hinley” (my name is Hiley…)

“Peece” (this was the closing greeting on a cover letter…I gather they meant peace?)

“i have lots of experience in many things and i am a fast learner”

Double and triple check your resume. Spell-check does not catch all errors. Have someone you trust review your resume, as well. If in doubt, keep it simple!

So your resume is error-free: could your email address be holding you back?

sxymom@....

hotdoc@...

nursiepoo@...

deluxediva@....

If your primary email address is inappropriate, do not use that email to send online applications. Create a user account on gmail or yahoo (or any other email provider) that is simple and professional. Save the funny acronyms and fun taglines for your friends.

I’ve also received resumes that go back over 20+yrs of chronological job experience in detail. Additionally, if you only worked for a company for a few months, it’s probably best to leave this off your resume, unless it was a temporary assignment.

You’re an excellent candidate with much to offer employers; make sure they know it by showcasing the best you have to offer on your resume!

You mention leaving off jobs that lasted only a few months. How do you explain the gap between jobs? What do you tell the prospective employer in that situation?

What about when you've been terminated unfairly? Do you put that in your resume or leave it out and if asked, what do you say? "No room for advancement"?

My main problem is I have VARIETY in jobs, not one genre because I just get hired for different things, because I can do them. But my resume looks all over the map. Any suggestions on that?

By the way, I am looking for work in Pinellas County, am Bilingual, fluent and have been unemployed now for 8 months. No call backs. Nothing.
