Blog Post: Yes, Virginia, it is OK to negotiate (when you have an offer)

posted Thursday, April 9, 2009 9:38 AM

Someone asked me to address whether we should by negotiating in these challenging economic times. The simple answer is "yes" you should still be negotiating with employers. However, there are times when you should not be negotiating and this has nothing to do with the economy.

I want to make a clear distinction regarding when you are justified, invited, and even expected to negotiate and when you are not. Through out the hiring process, you show up to the employer as 3 different people (no wonder you may feel like your head is spinning these days); 1) job seeker 2) #1 candidate and 3) new hiree. Truth is, you should only be negotiating when you are starring in one of these roles. Do you know which one?

Please let me know your thoughts and I will continue in the next posting to let you know mine.

I think the appropriate time to negotiate salary requirements is when you are the number one candidate for the job. As an interviewee you have no position of strength. As a new hiree, the money issue should have already been determined. The time when you have the greatest

I think the appropriate time to negotiate salary requirements is when you are the number one candidate for the job. As an interviewee you have no position of strength. As a new hiree, the money issue should have already been determined. The time when you have the ability to negotiate and can do so is when you have been offered a job and are considering accepting the position.

Waynette nailed it. As the number one candidate this is the time for you to make any counter offers after of course they have made their initial offer. This can be delicate, especially in these trying times. As a new hiree this is when you need to hit the ground running and back up what got you the job.
