Blog Post: Getting your resume noticed in a down economy
posted Wednesday, August 5, 2009 8:42 PM
Finding a job is hard enough and you have to be especially creative in a down economy to land that great new job. In my recent conversations with hiring managers they tell me that they are getting flooded with resumes as soon as they post a position and they still do not have enough time to read and qualify a mountain of candidates for one opening. Your goal has to be to stand out! You need to use traditional and persistent methods to get your resume in the hands of hiring managers. Here’s some tips:
> Call them on the phone: Many employers are still hiring these days though the saying “It’s not what you know it’s who you know” is even more relevant. You must make personal contacts these days in order to get noticed. Ask all your friends and family for leads into their, or other, companies to expand your contact base. Call anyone who may be able to offer help in finding the right people to talk with at companies, to find contacts in HR or hiring managers who may be looking for you. Do some internet research and find someone in HR at the company you’re targeting to talk with on the phone and give them a call. > Send your resume three (or more) ways: If you find a job posting that you’re especially qualified for, go ahead and send your resume through their job posting then get on their website and find some contact emails, phone and/or fax numbers for HR as well. You will want to email, fax and MAIL your resume to that perfect job posting. Sending your resume to HR three different ways means that you’re serious and must be noticed! I have found over the years that persistent candidates always go to the top of the pile. You can use free online searches to find contacts at any company (such as: spoke.com, zoominfo.com etc.). > Mail it!: A physically mailed resume printed on nice resume paper, focused on one specific job and well written will get my attention immediately. Especially if I’ve already seen the resume over email and fax. Follow up in 2-3 days with a phone call to HR and try to find someone who has seen your resume, ask them when they’ll be starting the interview process and that you want to show them how perfect you are for the job. (Use your own words) Be persistent though not agitating and you will be at the top of their list. Don’t do this for every job you see, only the ones you are exactly qualified to perform. Mailing in a large envelope is best. Also, get your resume shined up and make sure it is doing the best job at getting you noticed. Have someone look at it or contact a resume writer. You can contact me through this blog if you want a great rate on resume writing services too! Best of luck out there. Scott Sestak www.setampa.com
