Blog Post: Business Card Etiquette - Recruiter Style
posted Monday, July 2, 2007 2:52 PM
This is sort of a pet peeve of mine….when you receive a business card from a person, don’t just say thank you and put it in your portfolio, wallet, or pocket. Actually take a second to read it and allow the information to sink in. I give my business card out at different times of the interview process for different reasons. It is not to see how focused or prepared they are for the interview. It’s just the opposite: I want to see how relaxed they are for the interview and are they open to something different. Those who look at the business card and make a comment or ask a question are usually the ones who are relaxed and ready for the interview. Our business cards at Jobing.com are a bit unusual as they have our pictures on them (an instant talking point). Some people might have credentials after their name (MBA, PHR, SPHR, Ph.D., etc), if you don’t what all those letters mean, ask the person. They will be happy to tell you. If you do know what it means, ask them when they received it, what school/program they attended, etc. People love to talk about themselves. It takes the pressure off you and puts it on them. You will be amazed how this will impress that person.
So, in the future, take a peak at the card, there might be some good information for you!
