Blog Post: New Job - Help Your Family Embrace the Changes
posted Thursday, September 6, 2007 5:07 PM
A new job can be a big change for anyone: a new boss, new challenges, new commute – it all adds up! Not only is it an adjustment for you as you settle in to your new role, but sometimes friends and families can be affected as well. Any stay-at-home parent can tell you that going back to work can shake-up the whole hometeam. Taking the time to help children understand what has changed and what you are doing can help ease the transition.
Consider a family trip to your new place of work to see where you go and what you do. Maybe include them in a project to provide office art for your new desk. Even allowing kids to make a couple of phone calls during work hours can make a big difference for the comfort level of your kids. Also consider story time as a time to help children through their adjustment period. The Berenstain Bears book “Mama’s New Job” is a fun story that your kids can relate to and take useful lessons from, as they get used to the new routine. Check your library or bookstore for this or other books on the subject. Have you had an experience acclimating children to a new work schedule – please share your stories and wisdom with us and other job seekers in your community
