Blog Post: Kevin Bacon, Can You Hear Me…Yet?

posted Wednesday, October 31, 2007 1:20 PM

Alas, it’s working!

Here I go again with my little science kit, attempting to prove that I can, and will, connect with Kevin Bacon through the Jobing Community Blogs.

For those of you who are employers, you already know about this quirky little experiment because I published an article about it in Go Jobing magazine.  And, for those of you who are job seekers, well, all I can say is, “Wow, what a fantastic response!”

Admittedly, I’m a sneaky little man, with all kinds of shenanigans up my sleeve.  And, no matter how silly these blog postings may appear, the point of my effort is proving priceless.

I wanted to prove that technology has greatly reduced the number of degrees separating any two people on earth (hence the whole Kevin Bacon concept, based on six degrees of separation).  And, although Mr. Bacon has yet to contact me through these blogs, I am achieving two other goals that I hadn’t mentioned when I began this project, which are:

1. I was able to use the word “Alas” in written communication.
2. I’ve connected with gobs of people through this blog that I never, through my typical working responsibilities, would have had the opportunity to meet.  People from countless professions, organizations, and companies have contacted me. Some have called this experiment ridiculous.  Others are simply becoming a cheering section. And, others have found certain aspects of this experiment inspiring (even though it wasn’t my intent).

“Todd, this is my favorite new motto,” writes one respondent, regarding a recent blog post, begging for Mr. Bacon’s response. “There's nothing more powerful than passionate people connecting for a greater good. People move companies. Companies move communities. Communities impact cultures. And, cultures can change the world.”

Yes, I knew I would make new connections through this snappy little test.  The question is; where will all these new relationships lead?

That is the point right?  Online social networking connects people.  Yes, it’s working.  I’m connecting every day.

So, what about Kevin Bacon?

Well, I’m still waiting to find out if this blog posting can diminish the number of degrees from 6 down to maybe 3. Maybe this posting will be the one that slides across the screen of Kevin’s, cousin’s best friend—or some other obscure connection.  Maybe simply by writing this blog, everyone who reads it will be curious enough to check out www.sixdegrees.org, and something magical will happen there.  Or, maybe I’ll just continue connecting with all the great people out there in the Jobing Community—and relationships will be made that will lead to more relationships, which could possibly change the world a little bit for the better.

Who knows what could happen when you open yourself up to an entire network, an entire community, and an entire world of opportunity—to find your next great candidate, or find out more about your next great career move?

Get into the blogging community today. Tomorrow, you might be starting your blog the same way I began this one, “Alas, it’s working!”

Hey Kevin Bacon!  Help me further prove my point!
